For this week’s spotlight, Margaret is sharing an exciting opportunity she experienced in 2019.
“One of the highlights in my career was the opportunity to join Canada-Guyana Outreach Mission (CanGO) on a medical mission to Guyana in November 2019.
It was a multidisciplinary team with a developmental pediatrician, a child psychiatrist. speech-language pathologist, two physiotherapists, nurses, support personnel and me the lone audiologist. We travelled by boat to reach Indigenous villages in the interior. The people were very quiet but warm. Many have little or no contact with medical professionals other than through these missions. Our team focused on children, and my job was to determine if there was hearing loss.
One particularly fond memory was watching children paddle (up to one hour each way) to school. The kids were beautifully dressed in their school uniforms corresponding to their grade levels.
Members of CanGO have been recognized for their work in Guyana with a Golden Jubilee Award from the Guyana Consulate in Toronto. The award was presented at a virtual ceremony on December 27, 2020. It was my honour to work with such a wonderful group of dedicated people.”
