Our auditory processing treatment program was designed to encourage the development of auditory abilities in children and adults with auditory processing disorder. The program targets basic auditory skill development and desensitization to complex or noisy environments. The program begins with very simple tasks which become more complex and challenging as skill level is acquired. Several key intervention areas are addressed simultaneously.
This intervention approach also provides the opportunity to change activities on a regular basis, which will promote interest, attention, and participation during each individual session. The treatment program often also includes activities on the iPad. The auditory ability and skill areas most often targeted for development in the program include:

- 1. (PTP) is recommended to strengthen phonemic (speech-sound) decoding skills. These skills are used for reading and spelling.
- 2. Phonemic Analysis training is the opposite of Phonemic Synthesis. One takes apart words and breaks them up into the individual speech sounds.
- 3. Speech-in-Noise desensitization training can improve a person’s ability to pull out the speech of interest from backgrounds of noise. This also helps with tolerance of noise and improves listening skills.
- 4. Short-Term Auditory Memory problems that are due to APD, we believe are best addressed by rote memory drills. We do not measure short-term memory directly; however, if this is indeed an issue for the person then therapy for this could include work with digits, words, sentences and eventually commands (building up to multi-levels).
Activities in each area are tailored according to individual needs. Children advance through the program at their own pace. The full program is 14 weeks in duration, with one-hour sessions scheduled usually weekly. The length of each child’s individual program is determined by their needs and progress. The first and last sessions focus on assessing abilities before and after intervention and include surveys of listening behaviour and auditory processing assessments.
Research has shown that this type of therapy can show significant improvements in auditory processing abilities. We look forward to exploring this with you. Please contact us with any further questions.
